Our Origins

GEDmatch PRO emerged from a pivotal moment in forensic history—just a couple of years after the arrest of Joseph DeAngelo, also known as the Golden State Killer. Forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) was a novel technique utilizing DNA analysis of crime scene samples combined with genealogical dadtabase to zero in on the identity of a potential suspect, which was the technique employed in the identification of Joseph James DeAngelo. Building on this groundbreaking success, GEDmatch PRO by Verogen, a leader in forensic genomics founded in 2017 which was later acquired by QIAGEN in 2023. GEDmatch PRO remains the most frequently publicly cited genealogical database that is utilized in forensic investigative genetic genealogy.
